Solids Liquids and Gases

external image image008.jpgSolids:Solids have there own shape and cannot be compressed. As seen in these pictures the molicules in a solid are tightly packed. Solids cannot be poured.

Liquids: Liquids take the shape of the container they are in and also cannot be compressed. They can be poured and and changed the shape of easily.

Gasses:Have there own shape and can be compressed. Gases can expand to take theshape of the container they are in. What is Sublimation?Sublimation is when a solidd turns directly into a gas without going into a liquid first. This is very rear and doesent happen often.

Supposing you increase the pressure of the air above the boiling liquid. What would happen to the boiling point of the water?

The water will fog and then turn back into water again because of the pressure.

Imagine that you are trying to boil water for a cup of tea up a mountain. Why would the cup of tea be fairly horrible?

Because there is less pressure pushing down on the glass and therefore it wouldnent boil or it would take ages longer. It is also really cold and it has expanded.

Does water contract or expand on changing from a liquid to a solid?

Yes it does.

1. Why do icebergs float in antarctic and arctic waters? Do you think there is much of the iceberg under water or is it mostly above the water? How could you test your hypothesis?

I think most of the ice burg is on top of the water because when you drop a ice cube into a glass of water the ice cube is mostly uncer water. You could test your hypothesis by dropping a ice cube into a glass of water. 2. When you have a jar with a very tight lid, you can run it under hot water and it becomes easier to open. Why?

This happens because the jar is a solid and when a solid is heated as you know, it will decease in size :)

Colliods

An aerosol is a type of colloid that is liquid in gas. Aerosol spray is a type of dispensing system which creates an aerosol mist of liquid particlesAerosols are in a can and you spray them out. You cant see through them. Some examples of Aeresols are impulse, fly spray, spray paint, Lynx, Off (mosquito repelent) and lots more. :)
